Jamming and static stress transmission in granular materials.

چکیده
We have recently developed some simple continuum models of static granular media which display "fragile" behavior: They predict that the medium is unable to support certain types of infinitesimal load (which we call "incompatible" loads) without plastic rearrangement. We argue that a fragile description may be appropriate when the mechanical integrity of the medium arises adaptively, in response to a load, through an internal jamming process. We hypothesize that a network of force chains (or "granular skeleton") evolves until it can just support the applied load, at which point it comes to rest; it then remains intact so long as no incompatible load is applied. Our fragile models exhibits unusual mechanical responses involving hyperbolic equations for stress propagation along fixed characteristics through the material. These characteristics represent force chains; their arrangement expressly depends on the construction history. Thus, for example, we predict a large difference in the stress pattern beneath two conical piles of sand, one poured from a point source and one created by sieving. The physical properties of granular materials have been extensively studied in recent years. So far, however, there exists no theoretical framework which can explain the observations in a unified manner beyond the phenomenological jamming diagram [1]. This work focuses on the case of static granular matter, where we have constructed a statistical ensemble [2] which mirrors equilibrium statistic...

We demonstrate that a highly frustrated anisotropic Josephson junction array (JJA) on a square lattice exhibits a zero-temperature jamming transition, which shares much in common with those in granular systems. Anisotropy of the Josephson couplings along the horizontal and vertical directions plays roles similar to normal load or density in granular systems. We studied numerically static and dy...

We report an unexpectedly rich variety of new flow patterns on a granular heap that is centrifuged so as to simulate the reduction in gravity. These surface patterns exhibit coexisting static and flowing regions that depend strongly on centrifugal stress, but surprisingly not on mass flow rate. A discrete cellular automaton model reproduces some of the patterning features and indicates that sub...

A zero-temperature critical point has been invoked to control the anomalous behavior of granular matter as it approaches jamming or mechanical arrest. Criticality manifests itself in an anomalous spectrum of low-frequency normal modes and scaling behavior near the jamming transition. The critical point may explain the peculiar mechanical properties of dissimilar systems such as glasses and gran...
